Pike handling and welfare

To all anglers intending to fish for Pike on Loch Awe, please be familiar with modern pike handling and welfare techniques before fishing for pike. A good guide to pike handling can be found within this Angling Times guide:- https://www.anglingtimes.co.uk/advice/tips/how-to-handle-pike/

There is also a general guide to handling and unhooking Pike on the “Pike Angler’s Club of GB” website here:-

http://www.pikeanglersclub.co.uk/aboutpac/handlingcode.htm

N.B. The LAIA guidelines regarding tackle requirements take precedence in the above.

  1. Strike as soon as you get a bite: This will help to avoid many of the problems associated with the species. Any delay can lead to the fish being deep-hooked, pike will often sit on the spot eating the bait, so bites can be subtle. Don’t delay, strike straight away!
  2. Always use an Unhooking Mat.
  3. For tackle requirements when fishing for Pike on Loch Awe, please visit the LAIA byelaws page at:- https://www.lochawe.net/laia-bye-laws/

Always kneel when holding a fish up for a picture. Drop it when kneeling over an unhooking mat and it’s unlikely to come to harm. If you are standing up and it flips, it could be disastrous.

If after reviewing our Pike Handling and Welfare advice, you, or no one else who is fishing with you is still not confident with unhooking and handling pike, then please do not fish for them!
